hms arethusa Arethusa Class.  Designed as follow on to the earlier scouts to operate with destroyers in the North Sea but vastly improved on the previous ships.  They retained the side protection introduced in the later Town classes but reverted to a mixed main armament of earlier ships.

Built Chatham Dockyard, laid down October 1912, completed August 1914.

HMS Aurora
Built Devonport Dockyard, laid down October 1912, completed September 1914.

HMS Galatea
Built Beardmore, laid down January 1913, completed December 1914.

HMS Inconstant
Built Beardmore, laid down April 1913, completed January 1915.

HMS Penelope
Built Vickers, laid down February 1913, completed December 1914.

HMS Phaeton
Built Vickers, laid down March 1913, completed February 1915.

HMS Royalist
Built Beardmore, laid down June 1913, completed March 1915.

HMS Undaunted
Built Fairfield, laid down December 1912, completed August 1914.

Estimated average cost 285,000.

Length 410 feet pp 436 feet overall, beam 39 feet, draught 13 feet 5 inches, displacement 3,750 tons load 4,400 tons deep load..

4 shaft Parsons/Brown-Curtis turbines, 40,000 shp, 28.5 knots

Undaunted 38,252 shp = 28.47 knots
Aurora 35,015 shp = 28.93 knots
Galatea 38,708 shp = 28.81 knots

Armour:
3-1in belt, 1in decks

Armament:
2 x 6in 45cal Mk XII (2 x 1), 6 x 4in 45cal Mk IV (6 x 1), 1 x 3 pounder (1 x 1), 4 x 21in TT

Comments:
In order to achieve the high speeds designed they were the first British cruisers with all oil propulsion and lightweight destroyer type machinery.  Crew 276.

28 August 1914 took part in the Battle of Heligoland Bight.
25 December 1914 Took part in the Cuxhaven Raid.
24 January 1915 took part in Battle of Dogger Bank.
June 1915 5th Light Cruiser Squadron Harwich Force.
September 1915 Captured four German trawlers.
11 February 1916 Sunk by mine of Felixstowe.

August 1915 Took part in sinking of German raider Meteor.

24 March 1916 Damaged in collision with British cruiser HMS Cleopatra.

1923 sold for scrap.

HMS Royalist with forward mounted Sopworth Camel aircraft.  During the war the class received an additional pair of 21 inch torpedo tubes, an upgraded anti aircraft armament whilst all but Undaunted were fitted to lay mines and five of the class had the aft pair of 4 inch guns replaced by a single 6 inch gun. hms royalist
